FLASHBACK: Feds knew Air Force One photo-op flyover might spark panic in the city – but didn’t give a hoot

Reports that shots have been fired at a boat in Washington DC during Sept .11 anniversary commemorations are being played down.

Police and federal law enforcement officials have said the incident in the Potomac River was actually a U.S Coast Guard training exercise.

Lt. Mike Libby of the U.S Park Police said: “They’re in training exercise and we didn’t know it. Somebody reported that they had shot at somebody. That was part of the training exercise.”

President Barack Obama and Defense Secretary Robert Gates had been attending a ceremony at the Pentagon, south of the city on the Virginia side of the river.
