Police Raid Gizmodo Blogger’s House Over iPhone 4G

A blogger for Gizmodo.com lost four computers, two servers, and an iPad, among other things to police officers who raided his home in connection to the site’s recent acquisition of a next generation Apple iPhone. Blogger Jason Chen said the police entered his home last Friday.

San Mateo County District Attorney’s Office spokesman Stephen Wagstaffe said the raid was carried out after Apple reported that a felony may have occured in how Gizmodo got hold of the iPhone 4G, which was reportedlly left by an Apple engineer at a Silicon Valley bar.

Wagstaffe said the raid was part of an ongoing investigation. Gizmodo admitted last week that it paid $5,000 for the soon-to-be-released iPhone 4G. Gizmodo parent company Gawker Media said the seizure was illegal under California law.

Gizmodo posted on its Web site the search warrant, Gawker COO and legal representative Gaby Darbyshire’a response to the seizure, as well as Chen’s account of the events.
